Beyond the Stage: Brown Sugar Impact

Welcome to our takeover! As members of Brown Sugar, we're thrilled to share a glimpse into our world beyond the stage. We're more than just musicians; we're young women with dreams, passions, and a mission to inspire. Join us as we dive deeper into the world of Brown Sugar. This takeover will explore the impact of our music, our experiences as young artists, and the power of sisterhood. Get ready to be inspired.

Hello! My name is Daijhauna Smith and I have been a cellist for Bull City Music School for just under one year. Previously I played the cello for 3 years in traditional school and the difference in experiences and opportunities has impacted me greatly.

In the short amount of time I have been at BCMS, I have accomplished more in my music career than I did the entire 3 years in traditional school. Notably, I have become more “in tune” with my cello and music: playing at different tempos, learning to tune my own instrument, and exploring different styles of music (from Bach to Beyoncé!). The most impactful thing that has happened to me at BCMS is the exposure that we (the Brown Sugar Strings) get, exposure I wouldn’t have received playing at the traditional school.

The Brown Sugar Strings gained popularity when we had the honor to play at the first black-woman owned art gallery in the state of North Carolina, Ella West Art Gallery. Being a black girl myself and playing in that space with those who look like me really empowered me to continue to grow as a musician and to strive to be a successful black woman. I am confident that BCMS will help me to accomplish these goals and ultimately inspire others.

I hope to encourage other black children to not be afraid to change the lack of representation and to confidently change statistics, be the change that you want! In the words of Samuel L. Jackson, “Raise a ruckus and make a change. You may not always be popular, but you’ll be part of something larger and bigger and greater than yourself.”

Want to be part of something bigger? Join us in our mission to inspire and empower young women around the world. Donate to support our music and initiatives, and subscribe to our blog for exclusive content and behind-the-scenes access.
